Wireless charging was the most talked about topic in the Mobile World Congress which was held in Barcelona this year. This is a technology that is coming up, and several big companies have started to invest a lot to make this a success and offer this option to its customers. What is Wireless Charging?
As you get to know from the name, Wireless Charging refers to charging your device without the use of wires or cables. This technology needs to physical wires to get your battery charged. This is not an overall new technology. In 1891, the possibility ofwireless charging was demonstrated by the world famous Nikolas Tesla. He is well known for his works in the field of electricity and magnetism, which has largely defined our lives today. His theory on wireless charging was as per the concepts of the principle of electromagnetism put forward by Michael Faraday over 60 years before that. Even though the experiment was successful, and Nikolas proved his theories, wireless charging was yet to become a practical idea. The research done by Tesla on short distance wireless power transfer is what proved to be the base of the modern day researches on wireless charging of electronic devices.
It was around a century after the experiment that the theory made its way to become a part of an important research. It has finally become a part of the consumer market, and people are looking forward to this idea becoming a commercially practical and viable idea. A Wireless Power Consortium has been formed lately, which began outlining its plans in 2008. It has well set plans to get rid of the tiring cables and wires in the world and build devices that can charge up just by placing on charging pads. It is not very easy to make this possible, so a lot of research and work needs to be done.
The Reality behind Wireless Charging
Wireless Charging is also known as “Inductive Charging”. The main principle behind this is magnetic resonance or Inductive Power Transfer. Under this principle, power can be transferred between two devices with the use of coils. An alternating electro-magnetic field can be created from inside a charging base using an induction coil. The second coil that is placed in it receives the power and converts this in to electricity. This charges the battery of your device. The electrical transfer requires both coils to be within close range.
The Wireless Power Consortium has designed the interface, a power transmission pad over which you need to place your smartphone. It uses resonance inductive coupling to charge your device. “Qi”, pronounced as “Chee”, is leading in the field of wireless charging technology in the modern world. Big companies like LG, HTC, Asus, Motorola, Huawei, and Samsung are working towards this technology.
The Wireless Power Consortium, or WPC, and its Qi standard, the Alliance for Wireless Power Transfer or WP, and the Power Matters Alliance or PMA are the three groups set up by the industry to standardise the technology of Wireless Charging.
